About the E-Book
This easy to follow collection of photography tutorials is the ideal book to help you take full control of your digital camera and its settings. Each bite size tutorial is full of sample photographs and explanatory diagrams to accompany the jargon-free explanations of topics such as aperture, white balance and composition. I also try to inject a little humour into my explanations.
This book aims to get you off auto mode so that you can take the photographs that match your creative vision. Why let the camera decide these things for you? Although the technical side using your camera is covered in some detail in this eBook, over half of the text deals with the creative side of photography. The second part of the book deals with composition and the importance of the right light in creating beautiful photographs with real visual impact.
This eBook has been specifically formatted to be easily read on a Kindle or any tablet or smart phone that has the Kindle app installed. This means you can read one of the compact but information packed tutorials during your commute or even refer to them while out taking photographs.
Section 1: Exposure
The first section of the book covers the exposure triangle: aperture, shutter speed and ISO. I explain each of these settings and how they affect the final look of your photograph. We then look at how they can be used creatively. We also learn about common exposure problems and how to avoid them.
Section 2: Settings
Take full control of your camera by learning how to use aperture priority, shutter priority and full manual modes. Other important settings such as metering modes, white balance, focus, focal length and drive modes are also explained in an easy to follow way.
Section 3: Composition
The next section of the book deals with composition. This section presents 25 composition ideas that will help bring your photographs to the next level. It section covers a range of composition techniques from the rule of thirds and leading lines to photographic concepts such as “the decisive moment”. There are plenty of practical examples of photographs created using each composition idea.
Section 4: Light
Photography is all about light. When is the best time of the day to take photographs outdoors? What are the ideal weather conditions for outdoor photography? Why take photographs during golden hour or blue hour? What can I photograph on an overcast day for example? What can I photograph when it’s raining? This section on light and weather conditions aims to answer these questions and more.
